I left on a 6 day dog show circuit last Thursday and picked up this book at the Walmart in Valdosta, GA. While our trip is taking us into Florida, there won’t be any Orlando vacations this time. We will end up in Marianna, FL tomorrow and head home Wednesday.
Anyway, to get back to the book…Dead Sleep is a suspense novel written by Greg Iles in 2001. I found the book very well written and enjoyed the characters in it immensely. They were all well-fleshed out and were compelling in their own right whether they were good or not-so-good.
Jordan Glass is a twin sister of Jane who went missing about 18 months previously. Jordan has sworn to find her sister whether she is alive or dead. She’s in China when she sees a painting which appears to be of her sister….and her sister appears dead in the painting! Jordan immediately notifies the FBI of this and the several other paintings that are in the museum all of which feature women in poses of sleep or death and all of which are women who have been kidnapped and are presumed dead by their families.
Finally, after months of having women disappear nearly under their noses, the FBI has something concrete to go on. No bodies were ever found, so no one knows if the women are alive or dead. No fingerprints have been found, no DNA. Just emptiness where once there was a living, breathing human.
