Fire and Ice is a mix of romance, suspense and thriller all rolled into one.
Newspaper reporter Sophie Rose is the daughter of the notorious Bobby Rose, a Chicago iconic thief sought by just about every law enforcement agency there is. She puts up with a lot due to Bobby’s notoriety including threats against her and the routine bugging of her apartment and office, so when new threats erupt after Bobby is implicated in the swindling of the pension fund of a famous root beer maker, she’s not terribly worried.
She is forced to change her mind when a someone shoots her.
Life must go on and when her boss assigns her to interview William Harrington, she meets him and endures the two hours of the narcissist’s rendition of his 25 previous 5K races. She’s scheduled to meet and photograph him starting off from the race and subsequently crossing the finish line, but he’s not among the other racers. She just figures he changed his mind about running the race. When he ends up being eaten by a polar bear in Alaska and she’s contacted by the Alaska police because her business card is tucked inside the sock that’s on the only part of his body that was found — his right leg, she sets of to investigate this mystery.
Fire and Ice has elements that remind me of Nora Roberts‘ style of writing. Sophie has two friends and Ms. Roberts is trademarked by her three friends/sisters/brothers/books. The interweaving of two plot lines that eventually merge into one is also reminiscent of Ms. Roberts. Not that any of this is bad. Julie Garwood certainly has her own style that is uniquely her own.
