High Noon by Nora Roberts

High Noon by Nora Roberts is set in the lovely town of Savannah, Georgia. It centers around police lieutenant Phoebe MacNamara who is a hostage negotiator. In a profession dominated by men, Phoebe has made a name for herself by the professional and purposeful way in which she deals with both hostage situations and talking attempted suicides out of completing their task.

She meets Duncan Swift at one such tense situation and despite his immediate and intense interest in her, she brushes him off to return to her family. But Duncan is persistent and goes to Phoebe’s office to invite her out for a drink. Despite her better judgment, she agrees and that begins their interest in each other.

When Phoebe is attacked in the police precinct, she suspects an officer that she recently suspended for thirty days while an investigation of his handling of a hostage situation is reviewed. Other things begin happening — dead animals appear on her doorstep and she’s being followed. She doesn’t know who is stalking her; who is making her feel like she and her family are in danger and Duncan appoints himself her personal bodyguard.

This is a Nora Roberts that crosses the line between her romance and her suspense in a delightful manner. This book appealed to me on many levels and I hope to read more like it soon.
