Lean Mean Thirteen by Janet Evanovich

Ok — I know I just reviewed another of Janet Evanovich’s books, so it looks like I’m pimping some promotional products for her, but really I’m not. I just happened to pick these up off the bargain table at Sam’s Club, then read them back-to-back, so now you’re getting the back-to-back reviews :P

Lean Mean Thirteen by Janet Evanovich is of course, another in the Stephanie Plum line. I don’t know where Ms. Evanovich gets her ideas for stories from as they are all fresh and quirky and hilarious. No one would ever call them heavy reading.

Stephanie’s got a bunch of repeat skips to pick up and then Ranger gives her a couple of jobs to do as well. It’s actually Ranger’s job that gets Stephanie in the most trouble as she’s got to plant a bug on her ex-husband Dickie Orr. When Dickie goes missing, Stephanie is the lead suspect in his presumed murder.

But it’s the firm Dickie is partner in that’s under investigation not only by Ranger’s company but by the police as they are heavily involved with drug trafficking and gun trade. It’s a nasty business and people keep turning up burned to a cinder when Stephanie goes looking for them in conjunction with trying to find out what happened to Dickie.

All our favorite characters from Stephanie’s life are here — Lula, Tank, Grandma Mazur as well as Stephanie’s two hunks, Ranger and Joe Morelli. You have a smorgasboard of incedental characters who include a grave robber and a mad taxedermist who makes bombs out of road kill. If you don’t laugh at some point in this book, you don’t have a sense of humor.
