Sail by James Patterson and Howard Roughan

James Patterson has been one of my favorite authors with such characters as Alex Cross and Lindsay Boxer gracing the pages of his books, it’s no wonder. Even when he’s strayed from the murder and mayhem genre into Science Fiction with Maxximum Ride, I still followed and read.

Sail is yet another departure from what has become his norm. It’s about a dysfunctional family that takes a summer sailing trip to try to get them functional once more. While that goal is achieved, along the way attempted murder, adultery and danger abounds.

Some of the things that happen to the Family Dunne I find just a bit too far fetched. The characters seem stereotyped and shallow. Unlike some of his other novels, this one didn’t keep me turning the pages into the wee hours of the morning to finish it. It was all too put-down-able.

While it’s not a terrible book in the grand scheme of books, it’s not up to Mr. Patterson’s usual quality.

Sail was published in 2008 by Little, Brown and Company.
