When I saw this book discussed over at Heather’s website recently, I determined then that I just had to read it! It sounded like the perfect book for young and old alike and it did not disappoint.
It’s not too young for an old fart like me to find something touching, special and worthy in, nor is it too old for a new reader to comprehend and be equally delighted by. I have a 9 year old granddaughter that I will send this to as I believe she will enjoy it a lot.
The Beaumont family is a bit different. They are nice folks, but have something “added” to their character that you don’t find in your average neighbor. When they turn 13, each of them learns what their special Savvy is.
This year, it’s Mibs’ 13th birthday and she can’t wait until her Savvy reveals itself. She just knows it will be an extra special one! Her oldest brother, Rocket‘s savvy has to do with electricity and he can black out an entire city when it’s active.
Her next oldest brother, Fish controls storms. When he turned 13, they lived next to the ocean and Fish conjoured up a hurricane like no other! That’s when they moved to Nebraska — Fish just couldn’t be that close to that much water and learn how to scumble it.
Mibs had dreams of a yellow birthday cake with perfect red icing roses on it made by Momma. It wasn’t to be, though because the day before her birthday, her Poppa was in a terrible accident on the highway and Momma and Rocket had to go all the way to Salina to the hospital to be with him. Momma let the preacher’s wife, Miss Rosemary know and she whipped into action. She invited all the school children to the church, then went to get Mibs, Fish and their little brother, Samson to celebrate Mibs’ birthday.
Well, she’s too worried about her Poppa to feel much like celebrating plus when she woke up that morning, she was sure she knew what her Savvy was and also knew that it would help bring her Poppa out of the coma he was in. When a traveling bible salesman comes to deliver an order of bibles, she sees a way to get to the hospital and help her poppa.
And so begins the journey of Mibs, Fish, Samson, Bobbi, Will Jr and Lester.
This is Ingrid Law’s first published novel and what a spectacular beginning! I’ll be watching for more from this lady!
