We know Andrew Gross from his co-authoring with James Patterson. This is his third novel on his own and he shows just how much he’s learned from Mr. Patterson.
The Dark Tide is about Charles Friedman and his brush with death in a train bombing in Central Station, New York. Charlie’s wife, Karen thinks he’s died in the explosion and it’s not until a year later while watching a documentary of the event that she sees him running from the station as it burns.
She’s devastated and can’t understand why Charlie didn’t come home if he was all right. There’s something eerie going on and she enlists the help of Lieutenant Ty Hauk in unraveling the story behind Charlie’s disappearance. In the process, she almost loses her life.
The Dark Tide‘s plot is very “today” and the characters are well thought out and well drawn. We know who they are and what drives them. We get peeks into the world of the very wealthy and into the character of those who believe themselves above the law. It’s not a pretty place and it’s far removed from the lives of people looking for the best diet pill or struggling with a mortgage. I wasn’t left thinking my next door neighbor could be a Charlie Friedman.
