The Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit

The Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit is considered to be the bible of Data Warehouse administrators. Written by Ralph Kimball, Laura Reeves, Margy Ross and Warren Thornthwaite, it provides the database administrator or developer with a clear map on how to design, develop and deploy a data warehouse.

Data Warehouses are used as repositories of data used by non-technical people in reports. It’s supposed to be constructed in a manner that enables even the least technical person to create a report that provides data in a meaningful and cohesive way.

Let’s say you want to research low cost car insurance. Your data warehouse would contain the agency names, their rates and criteria that would provide you with the rates associated with each company for your particular details (model, year, driving record, age, etc) so you could compare them and choose the agency that would provide you with the best coverage for the best price. You wouldn’t have to have some IT person write the query for you, you would just choose the things that you wanted your report to show.

The Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit enables the database administrator to create the depository of the data you require to create your study. It’s written simply and clearly and takes you from designing the warehouse all the way through to deploying it. It contains many case scenarios and examples making it easy to understand and follow.
