Well, you had to know that it was coming sooner or later. I would review a book by Nicholas Sparks and it’s very fitting that  The Rescue is the first (of many) reviews to be written.

If you haven’t discovered Nicholas Sparks, you’ve been missing a real treat. His books are all set on the east coast area of North Carolina. He tends to stay in the smaller towns up and down the coast, so you won’t get too much Wilmington NC real estate included in the stories, but all of them are charming and tender and some of them even get scary.

The Rescue is a tale of love and commitment and how sometimes, even that isn’t enough. Denise Holton, a young single mother, is driving through a terrible storm when her car skids off the road. With her is her four-year-old son, Kyle, a boy with severe learning disabilities and for whom she has sacrificed everything. Unconscious and bleeding, she-but not Kyle-will be found by firefighter Taylor McAden. And when she wakes, the chilling truth becomes clear to both of them: Kyle is gone.

During the search for Kyle, Taylor and Denise connect in ways unfamiliar and frightening to Taylor who has been wary of falling in love and was previously very hurt by someone he had given his love to.

Using the familiar formula of girl-meets-boy, girl-and-boy-fall-in-love, they-separate, they-get-back-together, Nicholas Sparks nevertheless weaves a tale of love that is sure to entertain and maybe even extract a laugh as well as a tear or two in spite of the triteness of the theme.
